Always On The Move - 2018: Looking Forward

I started 2018 off by finally finishing, and releasing, my first photo book. Throughout the past two years, since I started photography, I’ve gotten so many questions about what I do, how I do it, and why I do it. My book, titled “Always On The Move”, is more than just a photo book to me. It’s a collection of memories, stories, and my journey, filled with stories, that have shaped me into who I am today. I’ve been extremely grateful to have seen so much of world, and the beauty it has to offer.

For those who are reading this blog post, thank you. Thank you for supporting something that I’ve been so passionate about, and for following along. I wanted to start the year off with my first blog post, speaking about the process, as well as some more insight behind my book. It started as an idea about a year and a half ago, when I was first developing prints of my photos to sell through my website. I have to say, nothing beats the feeling of seeing your work in print. I’m sure this applies to any creative artist – in today’s day and age, we’re so accustomed to be scrolling through a feed, clicking through hashtags, double-tapping photos, as if it’s a daily routine. Although social media is what gave the platform to be able to create this all – it’s so important to have a balance, and not let it get to your head. Although prints are amazing, I wanted to put together something that someone could hold in their hand, and for them to feel like they’ve been to the places I’ve seen. I know that people don’t get as many opportunities as myself to be able to travel, so it was so important for me to emphasize that.

I knew I wanted to create a book, but it was an extremely overwhelming process. Which photos would I choose? How would I bring the project to life? Who would print my book? Would anyone even purchase a copy? How could I ever be satisfied with the final product? So many questions arose during the initial process, but I constantly reminded myself – was this going to be another idea that I would put off, only to turn into another idea that I had wished I put the effort into? No. I was willing to do whatever it took to bring it to life.

Fast forward to today, I sold out all 250 copies of my book, to people in countries all over the world, literally. From Canada, to the US, Hong Kong, Dubai, Taiwan, Japan, Australia, Germany, Scotland, you name it. I’m not mentioning this to flex, or to show off. I’m telling you, anything you believe or want to put into action, you can make it happen. Anything. I’m not sure if you’re familiar with the artist Logic, but he said something that I’ll never forget. He told me that he always hears people, when talking about their dreams/following their passions, that they “would/want to do something, BUT…” or they “would, IF..” That’s when you’ve already let yourself lose. If you’re saying you would do something, followed by the word “but”, then you’ve already thought of an excuse to why you CAN’T do it, and letting that obstacle get in the way.

I was in LA this past weekend for the release of my book. I can tell you that I spent over 12 hours in the post office, packaging, signing, and handwriting every single name and address. It didn’t feel that way though – I just thought of how excited I was for those to receive the product, and for them to read through every word I wrote along with the pictures to follow. This week I’ve been receiving a lot of feedback from those who have received the book, and it made every second that I’ve put into this worth it. For those who don’t have a copy, I’ve attached a picture below; of a special spread I had included in my photo book. About 6 months ago, I had posted on my Instagram story, as well as tweeted, a message asking my followers to ask me anything, whether it be about my photography, or anything they had questions about. Although I didn’t originally mention this – I compiled and saved my favorite questions, and highlighted them in a section in the book, with in depth answers to them.

An AMA spread I had included in my photo book.

Now that my first photo book is finished, and out there for the world to see, now what? I’m currently writing this piece on a 21-hour flight back home to Vancouver from Dubai, reflecting on my first month of 2018. It definitely feels weird to not have to work on my photo book, something that I’ve been working on for the past 15 months. However, I can’t let the completion of my project turn into a position that I’m “comfortable” in. I’ve got so much more planned this year, and I can’t wait to share what I’m working on. I can’t wait to release my next photo book, and the one after that. I’m going to have photo exhibitions around the world, release my first merch pieces, and most importantly, keep doing what I love. I’m curious to know, what do you plan on accomplishing in 2018? Comment on my latest Instagram post I just posted, comment below, or DM me. I’d love to hear what you’re working on.

Logic - The Full Story

If there’s one question that I’m asked the most whether it be through a tweet, comment, or DM, it’s how I know Logic or first heard of his music. I never planned on writing this piece until recently, I decided to turn it into the full story of how I started listening to him and what led up today. Throughout it all, I’ve been more than fortunate to have met some incredible people from all over the world.

It’s hard to believe it’s creeping up on 5 years since the first time I heard Logic’s music. I used to be into the YouTube gaming community, specifically Call of Duty, and I was the owner of a team called Golden. We would create montages which were pretty much videos with gameplay in which we would edit and throw a song in before uploading to YouTube. As hip-hop music being the underlying theme for music used in these videos, we’d have different artists and songs for each video. Randomly clicking away on YouTube one day, I stumbled upon a track from Logic titled “Juice”. From the second I heard this song, I was hooked. Progressively, I started to use more and more of his music in my videos. His lyricism was definitely something that stood out to me compared to others. At this point of time, for those who were/are familiar with the gaming community, an online gaming team named FaZe was also starting to heavily support Logic as well. I’ve ran into Tommy, the owner of FaZe, at one of Logic’s shows in New York City, and he’s among one of the humblest people I’ve met.

Fast forward to 2012. As a way to show my support towards Logic, I created an account on Twitter with the handle @ShitLogicSays. The purpose of the account was to tweet song lyrics, pictures, and news revolving Logic’s career. Today, the account has spread to other social media platforms such as Instagram & Snapchat with a combined reach of over 75,000 followers. With that being said, I’ve been able to meet some pretty special people. I want to specifically give a particular shout out to two people, Nanisha & Garrett. Nanisha, who is behind Logic’s official website, MindofLogic.com, has been a very important part in the growth of my account. We’ve worked together on many projects released through his website, and I’ve had to chance to meet her a couple years back in Chicago. Garrett, whom I’ve yet to meet, is behind another extremely successful page on Twitter, @LinesofLogic.

I knew from the start, before even creating the fan page, that Logic was going to be successful in whatever he put his heart into. Looking back, that’s probably the best part of it all. The growth. He’s someone I truly look up to. If anyone who is reading this isn’t too familiar with who he is as a person, just go watch any one of his interviews on YouTube. I can assure you, that is exactly how he acts in person. I found that out when we first shook hands.

One of the things that I can recall is a tweet that Logic sent out prior to his headlining ‘Welcome To Forever’ tour in 2013. It went something along the lines of “I’m streaming now! Send me your numbers, I’m calling all fans!” Obviously, I shot his a tweet. Seconds later, I get a call from a blocked number. Damn, it was Logic. Although it was a short call, the first thing he mentioned was how thankful he was for me running a fanpage for him, and that he really appreciated all the support. I told him that I’d be meeting him for the first time and seeing him perform on his tour, as it was the first time he had ever come up to this side of Canada. Before ending the call, he told me to make sure to tell him I ran SLS when we met in person.

June 8th, 2013. Seattle, Washington at The Crocodile. That was the day I met Bobby. I remember having to drive down to Seattle for the show rather than see him in my hometown, Vancouver, since I wasn’t 19 at the time and the show back home had an age restriction. I went to the show with a few friends of mine, and we had the meet & greet package so we were all set. I recall moments the moments before, we were packed in a line around the corner to meet him, and I met Logic’s security guard Kenny. That man is a beast. When it was our turn, me and my 2 friends got our pictures, some autographs, and I also got him to give my gaming team a shout out. Something I incorporated in our YouTube videos, from time to time, were shout outs from artists that I placed in the beginning of the video. Right before we left, I asked Logic to look at my phone (it was my Twitter page). He was like “God damn! That’s you who runs that?! Man, I really appreciate all your support.” That moment right there was probably one of the coolest moments I’ve experienced. Just that validation, knowing that something I put so much effort into was recognized by Logic himself. Let’s talk about the show. Damn. It was nuts. He performed in front of about 400 people, packed from the front to the back. Looking back at it, this concert was actually the second concert I had ever seen. I remember how much energy he had on stage, and his ability to interact with his fans while on stage really stood out to me. After the show, I knew that this was just the beginning to a whole lot more.

If you’re familiar with who I am, you would know that I travel. A lot. I started working for an airline in the middle of 2013, and it’s honestly changed my life. It’s the reason I’m able to travel so much because of how cheap it is to do so. I’m going to remind y’all that travelling is really what changed my outlook on many things. There are so many places around the world outside the city you live in, and I haven’t even made a mark on the places I’d like to see. If you can, travel as much as you can and as far as you can. Spending money on experiences is by far better than what any materialistic good could ever do.

I mention this because I used my travel privileges to my advantage to see Logic perform in cities across the country. I’m not going to highlight every moment leading up to today, but this is one that stands out ahead of them all. Summer of 2013. Logic announced he was going on tour that Fall with Kid Cudi and Big Sean. I saw him perform in my hometown in Vancouver as well as in Seattle, and flew to Montreal to see him for the third time that tour. Since my sister went to school in Montreal, I had a place to stay for the weekend and we both went to the show together. It was at the Bell Center, an arena that seated over 20,000 people. I remember all I cared about was having a spot in the front row, rushing to the stage seconds after the doors opened and managing to snag a spot on the very right side of the stage. Before Logic’s set, Big Lenbo spotted me in the front and we talked for a little bit before he had to set up the stage. About 10 minutes later, he came back to the front and handed me a sticker. “Hop over. Logic wants to see you.” Without even thinking, I jumped over the barricade and walked backstage. Logic thanked me once again for coming out to support him, and how much it meant to him. I remember watching his set from the side of the stage with 6ix, Lenny, and Momberg, his tour manager. About halfway into his set, after he finished performing one of his songs, this happened.

I couldn’t believe what had just happened, let alone Logic stopping his set just to personally thank me for showing him support. Standing side-stage, I was reminded that you can really do whatever you want in life. As cliché as it sounds, it’s the most accurate advice I can give. If there’s something that you’ve always wanted to do, you have to do it now. Don’t wait until tomorrow, or it’ll never happen. I snapped back to reality when I felt a light tap on my shoulder shortly after Logic bringing me out on stage. I turn around and see Big Sean.

“What up lil’ homie? My name’s Big Sean. Nice to meet you man. I see you supporting Logic like that. Respect.”

At this point, I couldn’t even figure out what was going on. The whole crew took care of me that night, and I was able to spend a good time chatting with everyone.

Outside the studio in Los Angeles, CA with Logic & Big Lenbo.

This was the first time I had visited Los Angeles. January 2014. I had tweeted something along the lines of “Logic just dropped #24Freestyle and I’m going to be in LA for the first time this week.” Minutes after, Logic replied. “You’re going to be in LA? Come to the studio and listen to the album.” Man, was that ever something special. No I.D’s studio, nestled in Studio City, was full of history. To this day, it’s hard to wrap my head around the fact that Kanye recorded parts of Graduation in the same studio I had visited to hear Logic’s debut album, “Under Pressure.” It blew me away. Logic, deciding to release his first album with no features, really stood out to me. The fact that he didn’t need anyone else to tell his own story really made this album special. To this date, “Soul Food” remains as one of my favorite songs Logic has ever released.

I’m going to let these images tell the rest of the story.

Oh, how did I forget about this..

Crazy to think that tonight in San Diego, it marks the 25th time I’ve seen Logic perform. He’s currently on tour with G-Eazy, YG, and Yo Gotti and he’s selling out arenas and amphitheatres across the country. He’s now got 3 projects with Def Jam released under his belt with another one coming very soon, been on the cover of XXL as freshman, debuted as the #1 Hip-hop album on Billboard selling over 135,000 copies first week, and he’s now a married man. That doesn’t surprise me though. I knew he would amount to this level of success right from the beginning. Most importantly, since the first time I shook his hand, he’s remained the same person. Humble, down to earth, genuine, inspirational, and everything in between. Proud would be an understatement.

Japan

I know so many people who have Tokyo, or Japan in general, on their list of places they need to travel to. Let me tell you this, it’s everything you’d imagine plus more. There isn’t a time in the day that there’s nothing to do or going on. In comparison to the daily lifestyle, culture, and everything in between, it’s unbelievable to see the contrast between where we live compared to here. I was born here in Tokyo, moved to Canada when I was 3, and came back to visit a couple times leading up to graduating from high school, but it wasn’t until recently that I’ve been coming back at least a couple times a year. Anyone who knows me knows I need my BAPE fix.

I decided to switch it up this time around. Tokyo was always the destination for me whenever I came to Japan, but it’s just a small dot on the map compared to all of Japan. Osaka, the second busiest city in terms of population in Japan, was on the top of the list for me. I’m currently writing this post on the plane ride home, and it was yet another great trip for the books. I tweeted earlier this week saying at the beginning of the year I made a clear goal that I’d shoot photos in at least 10 countries in 2016, and that I was already halfway there. There’s a million places and countries that I’ve yet to step foot in, and I’m going to work my hardest to make it happen this year.

Osaka, compared to Tokyo, has rich roots when it comes to history, as there are countless iconic temples, museums, and historic landmarks. Kyoto, in particular, was home to many of those. I’m sure you all have seen photos of the Fushimi-Inari Shrine, famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates. Walking through the shrine was breathtaking. With my camera in hand, there were countless photo opportunities. I remember just standing at one spot in the shrine, just watching people from all over the world walk through with the same thoughts I had, in awe.

I know there probably aren’t too many people who read through these posts, but I appreciate all the support I’ve been getting lately on everything I’ve been pushing for, there have been some incredible opportunities that I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of lately, and I can’t wait to share the news. I think the hardest part of it all was finding that one thing that made me happy, and now that I’ve been able to do just that, I’m just focused on doing everything in my power to make it happen.

I’m just going to let the rest of the pictures speak for themselves. Enjoy.

Seoul

What a refreshing trip.

Seoul was on my radar as a city to visit for quite some time now. This past weekend, I brought my little brother as well as a friend along, mainly to visit my sister, who is currently living/working out there. Man, I thought Tokyo was hands down my favorite city in Asia. Everything from the food to the people to the culture was extremely fresh to me. At no moment during my visit did I feel "bored" or find an area to be "familiar". Although I didn't spend as much time shooting in the city as I normally would have, it was really nice to put the camera down and really take everything in. One thing that really stood out to me about the city itself was how alive it was; no matter what time of the day it was. Hongdae, a neighborhood known for its youthful and romantic ambience, underground culture, and freedom of self-expression, is definitely a place I'd recommend spending time at in the evening.

The architecture was on another level. Dongdaemun Design Plaza was a specific area that I had seen pictures online & on Instagram that I knew I had to shoot. Always looking for symmetry and strong lead in lines while taking photos, this place was perfect for me. However, I wasn't expecting to see an abundance of similar yet totally different structures, from the GT Tower, to Anyang Art Park, that really separated Korea from any other city I've visited.

As usual, I've added some of my most memorable & favorite photos from this short trip. Feels really good to have knocked this city off my must travel list. I'm currently working on a couple huge projects that will be announced in the near future. I'm really excited to show y'all.

Europe

Last week I made a trip out to Europe, which marked the first time being there. Ever since I could remember, I've always wanted to visit. Originally, I had planned to fly directly to Paris for a whole week, but instead, I thought why not see London at the same time, so I spent just 48 hours in London before flying to Paris for the rest of the week.

London was really interesting. Other than the fact that everyone had an accent, everything from the people to the architecture to the city itself had a really different vibe which definitely separated this city from any city I've travelled to in the past. I want to thank my homies Lamarr and Sonjay for spending the time to show me around their city and I had such a good time taking photos and observing the city with their guidance. It was really good to finally meet them.

Just over 2 days later, I caught a flight from London to Paris. I planned to take the train at first, bt with the flight being a third of the cost, as well as half the time, it was a no brainer. I arrived in the city in the morning and had 4 full days right in the city, staying right beside Gare Du Nord, one of the main train stations in the area. Man, Paris was incredible. I remember seeing the Eiffel Tower in person, at night, the night I arrived. I've seen countless pictures of the tower over the years, but to finally see it in front of me, was spectacular. If anyone reading this plans to go to Paris in the future, the food there is really dope too. The crêpes are mad lit. I also got to meet a couple friends in the city as well, Alex, Thomas, Mary, Max, and David - who actually was visiting from Toronto, which was cool. Spending pretty much the whole trip hopping on trains and visiting places to shoot, I was left with soooo many photos. I've narrowed it down to my favorite 10 below. Hope y'all enjoy.

I want to conclude this post by just stressing how beneficial travelling really is. Every trip I go on builds not only my portfolio with pictures, but most importantly, it builds knowledge and I believe it adds to your character. Taking home the experiences and value of being in specific city is invaluable and can't be replicated any other way. I'm excited to be travelling to Seoul, South Korea in the next 2 weeks and cannot wait to share my adventures then.

Chicago

It's been a minute since I took the time to write up a post, and as an update, the past month has been absolutely insane. LA, San Francisco, San Diego, Hong Kong, and Chicago. I've been meaning to update the site throughout it all, but I didn't find the time to until now. However, this past weekend was incredible.

I originally planned to fly into Chicago for Logic's show, the biggest of the tour, but I wanted to also give myself a couple days to shoot the city. The last time I was in Chicago, my first time, was also the same time I saw Logic perform at the House of Blues back in 2013. I landed in Chicago Thursday morning and got picked up from a friend (shoutout to my man Jose!). If you haven't been to Chicago before, Portillos is the spot you wanna hit for sure. Not even going to describe how good it is. Just go.

Logic's show was on Friday night. I had planned something special for him that I wanted the fans to be involved in, so I headed to the venue super early and got it ready. I framed a 24x36 poster with Logic's name in the middle, and in the text, were filled with images related to Chicago dating back from the first show Logic sold out in Chicago back in 2012. I got it all signed before noon where I headed to the city to shoot the city some more. I fell in love with Chicago. In the time I was there, it quickly turned into one of my favorite cities to take photos in.

The Logic show was nothing short of a movie. 5,000 people packed the Aragon Ballroom and it was one of the loudest crowds I've heard. Shoutout to George, also known as YaLocalWhiteBoy, for being that dude. He flew into the city for a couple days and it worked out for him to come out to the show. If you haven't heard of him, you have to watch his videos on Twitter. They're the best. I was able to grab some of my favorite photos I've taken of Logic as well, I've attached them all below!

I'm currently sitting at home, exhausted from all my travels, reflecting on how crazy these past several weeks have been. To whoever is reading this, there's something I want y'all to know. Travelling is truly the best thing you can do. As far and as often as you can. There's something you learn and get out of investing money into travelling that you will never ever achieve through purchasing materialistic things. I'm very blessed to be able to travel like this and I want to encourage everyone to do the same. Be realistic, never go a day without working on your goals, and be a good person. The rest will all fall in it's place.

G-Eazy & A$AP Ferg - San Francisco, CA

This past weekend was one of the craziest, eventful weekends in a long, long time. I'm struggling to find the time to update my blog despite many people asking, but I wanna start off the posts with the first night in California. Chris, the founder of EAZYSeason, which is coined as the official fan-site for G-Eazy, reached out and was able to set me up for a press pass to shoot G's show in SF this past Thursday. I had no idea what I was in for that night, as special guests such as Lil B, Bebe Rexha, as well as the dude Logic came out to make this show a memorable one. Packed with over 7,000 people, G's hometown show was one for the history books. I've attached my favorite photos from that night below. Enjoy!

Logic - The Incredible World Tour (Vancouver, BC)

This past Thursday and Friday marked the first two stops of Logic's world tour in Vancouver, with both of them being sold out months in advance. Going into the show, I had multiple questions going through my head. Will Logic be performing every song on his new album? How will the stage be assembled to match the theme of the album? One thing I can say after both nights is that he did one hell of a job with both.

Leading up to the show, there were many, many things I was excited to see. With fellow XXL freshman Dizzy Wright slated to open as well as DJs in the name of Hoppa & Rhetorik, I was already certain that it would be a night to remember. It's more than safe to say there's nothing quite like a Rhetorik set. The fusion of current hits with the sounds of classic songs constantly kept fans engaged. "I don't fuck with nobody. Nobody, at all. It's very simple. I stay at my house, just me, my homies, my wife, my little puppy, and I don't fuck with nobody. I don't go anywhere, I don't go to parties, I barely go outside." That's all Rhetorik had to include in his set to win me over.

I want to give a shoutout to Boone, a friend of mine, who killed the lights both shows. Everything from the lights to the on-stage visuals to the sounds were improved and on another level compared to any of Logic's shows in the past, and I've been to more than 20 of them. He went through every song on 'The Incredible World Tour', and he still managed to play fan favorites such as '5AM', 'Alright', and 'Ballin', among others. I was able to see Logic pre-show and one of the things he kept mentioning was how excited he was to play this album for the first time for the fans, and how proud he was of the stage setup and improvements he has been meticulously working on. If there's anyone who's reading this who is even slightly considering to see Logic on his upcoming world tour, which spans over 4 months of touring in cities all across North America as well as many dates in Europe, please do. Take a trip with Logic to paradise. Thank me later.

Tokyo

This past weekend I returned back home from a short, solo, 5 day trip to Tokyo, Japan. For those who aren't aware, I work for Air Canada which allows me to travel at a really good rate, and I try to visit Tokyo at least once or twice a year. Most of my time in the city I spent shooting with my camera (or shopping at the BAPE store), and was able to visit some really cool locations I haven't been to before. Wanted to shoutout a couple friends (Keychi, Vlad, and Khalid) who I met up with in the city. We hit a couple roofs and ate some bomb ass food. I've attached below my 10 favorite pictures from the trip, so I hope y'all enjoy. Really looking forward to February. Logic is kicking off his world tour in my city with two back-to-back shows so expect a full photo set when the time comes.

G-Eazy & ASAP Ferg

This past Thursday night I drove down to Seattle for a show that's been on my radar since it was announced prior to the release of G-Eazy's sophomore album, 'When It's Dark Out'. I want to thank a homie of mine, Dusty, for allowing me obtain press for this show and take some photos. The overall show was impressive - I saw a huge improvement in the on-stage visuals; from the lighting to the props to the overall sound. With equally as impressive opening acts in Nef The Pharaoh and Marc E. Bassy, as well as seeing ASAP Ferg for the first time, I was in for a great night. I'm excited to say I'll be back in Tokyo this Thursday for the weekend, so expect a bunch of blog posts from that trip. Tokyo for me? Amazing food, unreal shopping & opportunities to shoot around the clock. Stoked.

LA

Spent 3 nights in LA before heading to NYC for the weekend. I've never been so busy, schedule being packed day-to-day just running around. Huge shoutout to my man Max for letting me crash at his place for my time there, we spent a lot of time shooting around the city. Back in February for Logic's stop on the world tour.

Logic - Album Signing at Amoeba Hollywood

Finally had time to sit down and run through this past month, which was crazy to say the least. Starting with this event in LA a couple weeks ago! I flew down to LA for a couple days before heading to NYC for the weekend, and stopped by Amoeba's in Hollywood for an album signing Logic was hosting. I hadn't seen his for over 6 months so it was great to catch up with everyone. I want to take the time to thank Nick Mahar, his DP & photographer for taking care of me that night. I brought my camera into the event and managed to snap some shots. Really looking forward to that world tour, only 2 months away!

Mac Miller, Goldlink & Alexander Spit - Vogue Theatre

First of all, just would like to thank Mac Miller's management for allowing me to shoot this show. This one wasn't booked by Blueprint Events (the company I shoot for) so I had to obtain the pass through Mac's management.

Regardless, Sunday night was a one to remember. It was my first time seeing all three of these artists, and being a longtime fan of Mac since early high school, as well a big fan of Goldlink, I was impressed by both their stage performance as well as how they interacted with the crowd. I've attached some of my favourite shots of the night.

No Joy & DIIV - Fortune Sound Club

I just announced that I was hired by Blueprint Events as a event/concert photographer. I was reached out to by one of the marketing managers who overlooks event photography for Blueprint who checked out my work and sent me an email.

I was put onto a trial to see if my work/style fit what the company was looking for during this event, and this was the result. Looking forward to shoot more concerts this fall/winter, so expect regular updates with photosets!

Forest shoot w/ @chiggalo & @djfrancisco_

Ended up in a park about 10 minutes from home with Curtis and DJ for a mini shoot a couple weekends ago. Wasn't much a purpose behind this one but the I liked how the pictures turned out. Enjoy. Shot w/ my Canon 6D (17-40mm F/4 & 50mm F/1.8).
